Celebrating 80 years of Pony Club NSW in 2026!

Starting the Year Right: Getting Your Horse Ready for the Season Ahead

As Pony Club activities gear up for the new year, it’s just as important to prepare your horse as it is to prepare your club. After a break or lighter workload, taking the time to ease your horse back into routine helps set them up for a happy, healthy and successful season.

Check Your Horse’s Health

Before the season begins, it’s a good idea to give your horse a general health check. Ensure vaccinations, worming and dental care are up to date, and keep an eye on weight and overall condition. If your horse has had time off, consider a gradual fitness plan and speak with your vet or coach if you have any concerns.

Review Hoof Care and Farrier Schedules

Strong, healthy hooves are the foundation of every riding horse. Check that shoeing or trimming schedules are current and that hooves are in good condition before returning to regular work. Changes in workload can affect hoof growth, so regular monitoring is key.

Bring Them Back into Work Gradually

Whether your horse has had a holiday or simply a quieter period, building fitness slowly helps prevent injury and soreness. Start with walking and light work, gradually introducing trot, canter and jumping as your horse’s strength and stamina improve. Consistency is far more important than speed.

Check Your Tack and Fit

A new season is the perfect time to check saddle and bridle fit. Changes in fitness, weight or muscle tone can affect how tack sits. Ill-fitting equipment can lead to discomfort or behavioural issues, so addressing this early keeps your horse comfortable and willing.

Focus on Groundwork and Manners

The start of the year is a great opportunity to revisit groundwork. Simple exercises that reinforce leading, standing still, and responsiveness help build respect and trust. Good manners on the ground make everything easier — from rallies to competitions.

Support Mental Wellbeing

A calm, confident horse performs better and enjoys their work more. Consistent routines, positive training sessions and plenty of downtime all contribute to good mental wellbeing. Remember that patience and clear communication go a long way.

Setting Up for a Successful Season

Preparing your horse thoughtfully at the start of the year creates a solid foundation for the months ahead. By prioritising health, comfort and gradual training, you’re setting your horse up to enjoy their Pony Club journey alongside you.
