Education has always been at the heart of Pony Club.
Long before the ribbons, championships and competition results, Pony Club has been about learning — learning how to care for a horse, how to ride well, how to make good decisions, how to support one another and how to become a capable, responsible horse person.
Now, Pony Club NSW is bringing that education together under one clear framework: The Seven Pillars of Education.
The Seven Pillars have been developed to make education easier to recognise, easier to share and, most importantly, more relevant to our members, coaches, volunteers, Clubs and Zones.
They cover far more than riding technique.
From horse welfare and horsemanship to jumping, flatwork, rider development, integrity, rules, safety and strong Pony Club communities, the Seven Pillars reflect what we believe a well-rounded Pony Club education should look like.
And while each pillar has its own focus, they all share one goal:
To help our members become knowledgeable, confident, capable and compassionate horse people — both in and out of the saddle.
Everything starts with the horse.
From the Ground Up focuses on developing genuine horse people — not simply riders.
Understanding how horses think, move, communicate and respond is fundamental to everything we do. This pillar will explore horse care, handling, welfare, feeding, health, behaviour, stable management and practical horsemanship.
It is about teaching riders to notice the small things.
Is my horse comfortable?
Is my gear fitting correctly?
Is my horse tired, sore, worried or confused?
Am I listening to what my horse is telling me?
Good riding begins with good horsemanship, and good horsemanship begins with putting the horse first.
Because before we teach riders how to win, we want to teach them how to care.
Raising the bar doesn’t always mean making the fence higher.
Sometimes it means improving the approach.
Sometimes it means finding a better rhythm, developing a stronger position, understanding a related line or learning how to ride a course more effectively.
Raising the Bar is our jumping education pillar, designed to help riders build the skills they need before simply progressing in height.
Through exercises, coaching tips, course-riding education and practical lessons, we’ll explore everything from poles and grids through to turns, distances, rhythm, balance and competition preparation.
The focus is simple:
Ride better first. Jump higher later.
Because progression should be measured in skill and understanding — not just centimetres.
Good flatwork supports almost every discipline.
Whether you love dressage, jumping, eventing, sporting, mounted games or simply riding at your local rally, the ability to influence your horse’s rhythm, balance, straightness and way of going makes everything else easier.
Taking It All in Your Stride is about making every stride better.
It isn’t only about advanced dressage movements or riding a perfect test. It is about building the foundations that create a more balanced, responsive and enjoyable horse.
We’ll explore topics including transitions, circles, bend, rhythm, straightness, rider position, test riding and simple exercises that members can practise at home or at Pony Club.
Because sometimes the biggest improvement doesn’t come from learning something harder.
It comes from doing the basics better.
Pony Club develops far more than riding ability.
It teaches resilience.
Responsibility.
Confidence.
Goal setting.
Teamwork.
Leadership.
Problem solving.
And sometimes, how to get back up after things haven’t gone to plan.
Beyond the Saddle focuses on developing the person behind the rider.
We’ll talk about confidence, nerves, competition preparation, goal setting, sportsmanship, resilience and the many life skills young people develop through horses and Pony Club.
Not every success can be measured with a ribbon.
Sometimes success is completing the course you were nervous to ride.
Sometimes it is trying something new.
Sometimes it is helping another member.
And sometimes it is simply having the courage to keep going.
The rider matters just as much as the result.
The way we behave matters.
Pony Club should be a place where young people feel safe, supported, included and respected.
Setting the Standard will focus on the values and behaviours that help create that environment.
Topics will include sportsmanship, bullying, respectful communication, social media behaviour, child safeguarding, integrity and the responsibilities we all share as riders, parents, coaches, officials and volunteers.
Winning should never come at the expense of another person.
Passion should never become poor behaviour.
And disagreement should never override respect.
We want our young members to learn that being a great horse person also means being a good teammate, competitor and member of their community.
The standard we walk past is the standard we accept — and at Pony Club NSW, we want to set it high.
Rules shouldn’t be something riders discover after they have made a mistake.
Understanding the rules is part of being prepared.
Know the Rules will make Pony Club rules, gear requirements and competition information easier to understand and easier to access.
We’ll break down commonly asked questions about equipment, competition requirements, rider eligibility, grading, gear rules and other areas members regularly need help navigating.
Rather than expecting families to know where every answer is hidden, we want to build confidence in understanding both what the rule is and why it exists.
Rules help create fairness, consistency and safety.
And a rider who understands the rules walks into the competition arena better prepared.

Great Pony Clubs don’t happen by accident.
Behind every rally, event, championship and smiling group of riders is a community of people working together.
Ready for Anything brings together the practical side of Pony Club life — safety, risk awareness, volunteers, Clubs, Zones and the people who make our organisation work.
We’ll share education and ideas around safer Pony Club activities, planning, Club and Zone development, grants, volunteer support, welcoming new families and strengthening the experience members receive when they arrive at Pony Club.
We’ll also celebrate the people and Clubs getting it right.
Because sometimes the most important education isn’t about what happens in the arena.
It’s knowing how to welcome a new family.
How to support a volunteer.
How to plan well.
How to create a safe environment.
How to build a Club where people want to stay.
Strong riders need strong Pony Clubs behind them.
The Seven Pillars aren’t intended to replace the incredible education already happening throughout Pony Club NSW.
They are designed to strengthen it.
To give our coaches, Clubs and Zones more resources.
To give families practical information they can understand and use.
To give young riders more opportunities to learn.
And to remind us that Pony Club education has never been about producing riders who can simply complete a course or perform a test.
We are developing horse people.
People who listen to their horses.
People who ride with purpose.
People who train thoughtfully.
People who understand the rules.
People who behave with integrity.
People who support those around them.
And people who are ready for whatever comes next.

Some will help you ride better.
Some will help you understand your horse better.
